Common Problems

Common Radiator Problems We Fix

Most radiator problems have a straightforward fix — but the wrong diagnosis wastes money. Our engineers identify the root cause before recommending any work. Here are the eight most common issues we attend across London.

Radiator cold at the top

Air trapped in the radiator prevents hot water circulating to the top section. The fix is straightforward bleeding — our engineer releases the trapped air and checks system pressure.

Very common

Uneven heating across rooms

When some rooms are hot and others stay cold, the heating system is likely out of balance. System balancing — adjusting flow rates to each radiator — restores even heat distribution throughout the property.

Efficiency fix

Radiator cold at the bottom

Cold spots at the bottom typically indicate sludge or debris build-up restricting hot water flow. Power flushing clears the blockage and restores full heat output across the panel.

Very common

Radiator not responding to TRV

A stuck or failed thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) can prevent a radiator from heating or cause it to stay on permanently. We test, free or replace the valve — usually a quick fix.

Common

Leaking radiator

Leaks most commonly occur at the valve, the bleed point, or at a pinhole in the panel itself. We identify the exact source before advising on repair or replacement — never guess-and-replace.

Act quickly

High energy bills, low heat output

Sludge build-up inside an ageing system forces the boiler to work harder for less heat. A power flush removes years of debris and can significantly reduce energy consumption and heating bills.

Efficiency fix

Noisy radiators or pipes

Banging, clicking or gurgling sounds can indicate trapped air, water hammer, or a failing pump. Our engineer diagnoses the source and resolves it — without unnecessary parts replacement.

Common

Whole system not heating

If multiple radiators are failing simultaneously, the problem often lies with the boiler, pump, or central heating controls rather than the radiators themselves. We diagnose across the full system.

What Do You Need?

Radiator Installation, Repair or Replacement – What Do You Need?

Not sure whether your radiator needs fixing, replacing, or whether you’re adding a new one entirely? Here’s a straightforward guide — though our engineer will always confirm the right course of action at no charge before any work begins.

Repair

Your existing radiator needs fixing

Repair is almost always the right first option — and usually the most cost-effective. Most radiator faults are caused by trapped air, a stuck valve, or minor corrosion at a fitting, all of which can be resolved quickly without replacing the radiator itself.

Replace

Your existing radiator needs replacing

Replacement makes more sense when the radiator itself is the source of the problem — typically through corrosion of the panel, persistent pinhole leaks, or when efficiency has dropped significantly. Modern radiators are considerably more efficient than older models, and upgrading to a designer or low-surface-temperature radiator can also improve safety and room aesthetics.

Install new

You're adding a radiator to a room

Adding a new radiator to an existing central heating system is a straightforward job for our engineers — whether you’re heating a previously unheated room, extending into a converted space, or adding a heated towel rail in a bathroom. We also install radiators as part of loft conversions, extensions, and renovation projects, and carry out full system balancing after every new installation.

Not sure which applies to your situation? Our engineer will assess your radiator at no charge and give you an honest recommendation before any work is agreed.

The Process

Our Radiator Service Process

Four clear steps — from diagnosis to a fully tested, balanced heating system.

Inspection & assessment

Your engineer inspects the affected radiator or radiators and the wider heating system. We assess the boiler pressure, check for obvious faults, and gather the information needed to diagnose accurately before touching anything.

No guesswork — diagnosis first

Diagnosis & fixed quote

Based on the inspection, your engineer explains exactly what the problem is, what work is needed, and confirms the fixed price before starting. You approve the cost and the scope — no work begins until you're satisfied.

Fixed price confirmed before we start

Repair, replacement or installation

Your engineer carries out the agreed work — whether that's bleeding, valve replacement, full radiator swap, new installation, or power flushing. Your home is left clean and tidy on completion, with all old parts removed.

Most jobs completed same day

Testing & system balancing

After any repair, replacement or installation, we run the system and test all affected radiators for correct heat output. Where required, the system is re-balanced to ensure even heating across every room in the property.

Why Choose Elite Home Renovators

Why Choose Our Radiator Specialists in London

Specialist heating expertise

Our engineers specialise in heating systems — not generalist plumbing. With over 15 years of radiator installation and repair work across London, we diagnose problems correctly the first time and avoid unnecessary parts replacement or return visits.

Heat output calculated for every new installation

System balancing after every job

After every radiator installation or replacement, we re-balance the heating system to ensure every radiator in the property receives the correct flow rate. Many engineers skip this step — leaving customers with one very hot room and several cold ones.

System tested and balanced before every job is signed off

Efficient, right-first-time installations

New radiator installations are sized correctly for the room — not just swapped like-for-like without assessment. We calculate the correct heat output required and recommend the right radiator type and size for the space, ensuring maximum efficiency from day one.

Heat output calculated for every new installation

Quality materials, long-term performance

We only fit radiators and valves from reputable manufacturers — no low-grade components that fail within a year. Every replacement part and new radiator is sourced for longevity, not lowest cost. We stand behind our recommendations with our 12-month guarantee.

Quality-assured parts · 12-month workmanship guarantee

Fast repairs — most jobs same day

The majority of radiator repairs — bleeding, valve replacement, minor leak repair — are completed on the same day you call. We carry the most common replacement parts on every van so there are no unnecessary return visits while waiting for parts to arrive.

Common parts stocked on every van · Same-day completion

Fixed prices, no hidden charges

Your engineer confirms the exact price before any work begins. There is no call-out charge, no mark-up on parts that we don't disclose, and no surprise extras on the invoice. What we quote is what you pay — every time, with no exceptions.

“Three radiators in our Victorian terrace had been cold at the bottom for years — we’d been told it would need a full power flush. The engineer came, diagnosed a sludge build-up in two of the three, power flushed the system and balanced it properly. Heating is now consistent throughout the whole house for the first time in years. Brilliant job.”

“Called about a leaking radiator in the bedroom — the engineer arrived the same afternoon, identified the leak was coming from the bleed valve rather than the panel itself, and fixed it in under an hour. He also noticed the TRV was sticking on two other radiators and replaced both while he was there. Fixed price, no mess, job done.”

“We had a new radiator installed in our loft conversion — the engineer measured up correctly, recommended the right output for the room size, and fitted it neatly with minimal disruption. He balanced the whole system before leaving and the new room heats up as quickly as the rest of the house. Exactly what you want — professional and no fuss.”

FAQs

Radiator Services FAQs

The most common causes are trapped air (cold at the top), sludge build-up (cold at the bottom), a stuck or failed thermostatic valve, or low boiler pressure. If only one radiator is affected, the problem is almost always within the radiator or its valves. If multiple radiators are failing simultaneously, the cause is more likely to be the boiler, pump, or heating controls. Our engineer will diagnose the specific cause before recommending any work.

Bleeding a radiator involves releasing trapped air from the bleed valve at the top corner of the panel using a radiator key. It is a relatively simple task most homeowners can do safely — turn the key anti-clockwise until you hear air hissing, wait until water appears, then close the valve. However, if the radiator refills with air repeatedly, there is an underlying issue with system pressure or a failed automatic air vent that needs professional attention. We are happy to bleed, re-pressurise and diagnose in a single visit.

Replacement is the right call when the radiator panel itself is the problem — typically a pinhole leak caused by internal corrosion, or persistent cold spots that do not resolve after power flushing. If the radiator is over 20 years old and causing repeated issues, replacement is usually more cost-effective than further repair. Our engineer will give you an honest assessment — we never recommend replacement when a repair is the better option.

Simple repairs such as bleeding or valve replacement start from £65–£95 and are completed as fixed-price jobs. A like-for-like radiator replacement starts from £180. New radiator installation (including pipework) starts from £250. Power flushing is quoted after assessment as the cost depends on the number of radiators and system condition — typically from £350 for a standard London home. All prices are confirmed before any work begins, with no call-out charge.

System balancing is the process of adjusting the flow rate to each radiator so that all rooms in the property reach the correct temperature at the same rate. Without balancing, radiators closest to the boiler receive too much heat while those furthest away stay cold. Any property where some rooms heat well and others do not will benefit from balancing. We include system balancing as standard after every new radiator installation, and offer it as a standalone service for existing systems.

Power flushing uses high-pressure water and specialist cleaning chemicals to remove sludge, rust and debris that has accumulated inside your heating system over many years. Signs you may need a power flush include: multiple radiators with cold spots, noisy boiler or pump, slow heating times, or discoloured water when bleeding. We always diagnose first before recommending a power flush — it is not always necessary and we will tell you honestly if simpler measures will achieve the same result.

Yes — for all standard radiator repairs, valve replacements, and single radiator replacements, you can remain at home throughout. Heating and hot water will typically need to be switched off for the duration of the work and re-started at the end. For power flushing, the system will be offline for most of the day. Your engineer will advise on timing and any temporary disruption before starting work.
