What We Fix

Common Drain Emergencies We Attend

Our drain engineers attend all types of blocked and failed drainage across London — 24 hours a day, every day of the year. All emergency work is carried out at a fixed price agreed before we start, with no surprise on your bill.

Blocked Kitchen Sink & Drains

Fat, grease, and food debris accumulation is the most common drain emergency in London homes. We high-pressure jet the entire run from trap to stack to restore full flow.

Blocked or Overflowing Toilet

Toilet blockages caused by wet wipes, sanitary products, or foreign objects — cleared same day. Overflowing toilets and full sewage backup attended as priority emergencies.

Blocked Bathroom & Shower Drains

Hair, soap, and limescale build-up causing slow or stopped drainage in bath and shower traps — cleared quickly without removing sanitaryware where not required.

Sewage Backup & Foul Smell

Raw sewage backing up into sinks, baths, or at manhole covers — treated as a priority emergency. We identify and clear the blockage and sanitise the affected area.

Tree Root Ingress

Tree roots penetrating clay drain pipes are a leading cause of recurring blockages in older London properties. We use CCTV to confirm root ingress and root-cut or reline the affected section.

Collapsed or Displaced Drains

Subsidence, age, and poor installation can cause drain pipes to fracture or joint-separate. We deploy CCTV to identify the failed section and offer no-dig drain lining where excavation can be avoided.

External & Shared Drains

Blocked manholes, gullies, and shared drainage runs — including liaison with Thames Water for issues affecting the public sewer. We can confirm drain ownership and responsibility before work begins.

CCTV Drain Survey

Full CCTV inspection of your drain run — required by many insurers, freeholders, and mortgage lenders, and the definitive way to find recurring blockage causes. Report and video issued the same day.

While You Wait

What to Do When a Drain Blocks

Taking the right steps immediately can prevent water damage and stop a blocked drain from becoming a flooding emergency while you wait for our engineer.

Stop using the affected drain immediately

Do not run taps, flush toilets, or use appliances connected to a blocked drain. Adding more water to a blocked system will cause it to back up and overflow faster.

Check whether other drains are affected

If multiple drains in the property are blocked simultaneously, the blockage is likely in the main drain run or stack rather than an individual waste pipe. Tell our engineer when you call — it helps us dispatch the right equipment.

Locate your external manhole cover

Find the inspection cover nearest your property. If it is full of water or sewage, the blockage is in the main drain or beyond. If it is empty, the blockage is inside the property. This information helps the engineer identify the problem faster on arrival.

Document any damage for insurance

If water or sewage has escaped into living areas, take photographs and video before cleaning up. Our engineer will provide a written job report for your insurance claim after the work is complete.

⚠️ Do NOT attempt these yourself

  • Do not use chemical drain unblockers (bleach, caustic soda, commercial products) in an active blockage — they can react with standing sewage water and cause injury, and they rarely clear a genuine blockage.
  • Do not use a standard sink plunger on a main drain blockage — it is ineffective and can push debris deeper into the system.
  • Do not pour boiling water into a blocked drain that may be PVC — boiling water can soften and distort plastic waste pipes, causing permanent damage.
  • Do not pour boiling water into a blocked drain that may be PVC — boiling water can soften and distort plastic waste pipes, causing permanent damage.
  • Do not enter any inspection chamber or drainage pit — confined space entry requires specialist equipment and training.

“Drain backed up into the kitchen sink at 10pm on a Tuesday. Called Brilliant Plumbing, someone answered immediately and the engineer was at the door in under 50 minutes. He high-pressure jetted the whole run, showed me the camera footage of where the fat build-up was worst, and gave me written confirmation before leaving. Fixed price, no hidden charges, absolutely professional.”

“Toilet completely blocked and backing up on a Saturday morning — sewage smell in the bathroom. Brilliant Plumbing had an engineer with us within 55 minutes. He cleared the blockage, ran a CCTV camera down the stack, and found a partial root ingress from the garden. Gave us a written quote for the relining work and fixed the immediate emergency on the spot. Genuinely couldn’t have asked for more.”

“Three drains blocked simultaneously in our Victorian terrace — kitchen, downstairs bathroom, and the external manhole full. Called at midnight, engineer arrived by 1:10am. He identified the main sewer run blockage straight away, high-pressure jetted the whole system, and was gone by 2:30am. Everything draining perfectly. Fixed price agreed on arrival and not a penny over.”

FAQs

Emergency Blocked Drain Questions Answered

We aim to reach your property within 60 minutes across all 33 London boroughs, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our average emergency response time is 47 minutes. We will confirm an estimated arrival time when you call or submit your request.
No. We never charge a call-out fee — not at night, not at weekends, not on bank holidays. You pay only for the work carried out at the fixed price your engineer agrees with you before starting.
The most common causes are fat, grease, and food debris in kitchen drains; hair, soap, and limescale in bathroom and shower drains; wet wipes, sanitary products, and excess toilet paper in toilet drains; tree root ingress in external and shared clay drain runs; and collapsed or joint-displaced pipework in older London properties with ageing clay or earthenware drainage.
Yes. For recurring blockages or where a structural drain issue is suspected, we deploy a CCTV drain camera to inspect the pipe interior and identify the exact cause. This allows us to fix the root problem rather than just clearing the immediate symptom. Our CCTV cameras are carried on every emergency vehicle, so we can survey on the same visit without a separate appointment.
A recurring blockage almost always has a structural cause — tree root ingress, a collapsed pipe section, a misaligned joint, or a partial sag in the drain run. A CCTV survey is the definitive investigation. Depending on what it shows, we can reline the drain using a no-dig CIPP liner (avoiding excavation), root-cut the affected section, or carry out targeted excavation and repair. We will give a fixed-price quote for all options after the survey.
As a general rule, you are responsible for drains within the boundary of your property that only serve your property. Thames Water is responsible for public sewers (shared drains serving more than one property) once they reach the public highway. Our engineers can carry out a CCTV drain survey to confirm where the blockage is located and whether it falls within your responsibility or Thames Water's — saving you the cost of unnecessary work on a drain that should be repaired at the utility's expense.
Yes. We cover all 33 London boroughs with emergency drain engineers available 24/7. We have engineers stationed across north, south, east, and west London so we can reach any borough within our 60-minute target response time.
